How to raise a reader

It's never too early to steer your child toward books. But for toddlers, the goal is not to make sure they can read the classics before they're out of preschool. "The phrase to remember is 'developmentally appropriate,'" says Roni Leiderman, associate dean of the Family Center at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. "Parents often come to me wanting to push academics too much, too fast, too soon. In fact, children learn best through play. Make reading a joyous event for them."

Use books to bond
"It's not about reading the words," says Leiderman. "At this age it's about learning to love the interaction with Mom, Dad, or a caretaker." When your child sits in your lap as you read aloud, she doesn't just enjoy books, she also enjoys the security of your undivided attention.

Set up a ritual
A regular reading time establishes a calming routine young children love — that's why the bedtime story is a time-honored tradition. But don't forget that many other daily events also provide good reading opportunities. Once in a while try establishing a new ritual with a breakfast story, a bathtub story, a just-home-from-daycare story. Some toddlers (and older children) who are heavy sleepers are much better able to face the day when their parents "read them awake" rather than hustle them out of bed.

Choose appropriate books
Toddlers love board books, bathtub books, and pop-up books — any type they can hold easily and manipulate themselves. They love stories accompanied by bright, clear, realistic pictures. And of course they love rhymes. That's not to say your 2-year-old won't appreciate the stories her big brother chooses — who knows, Rocks and Minerals may end up being her favorite book. Just make sure she has access to simpler books as well.

Repeat, repeat, repeat
Stifle your yawns if you've read The Very Hungry Caterpillar every night for the past month and your child still asks to hear it again. Repetition is a hallmark of the toddler years. "The reason children love to read the same stories over and over and over again is that they're so thirsty to learn," says Leiderman. You'll soon find that your toddler has memorized her favorite passages and is eager to supply key phrases herself — both signs of increasing reading readiness.

Ham it up
Lose your inhibitions when you read to your child. Growl like the Papa Bear in Goldilocks, squeak like Piglet in Winnie-the-Pooh. Kids love drama as much as adults do — in fact, your youngster may love to pretend to be the scary wolf in The Three Little Pigs. Encourage her, even if it slows the story's progress. She'll get more out of the story if she's participating actively.

Follow her interests
Choose books about her favorite activities — visiting the zoo, swimming, playing ball. Back up your kids' favorite videos and TV shows with books about the characters. You may be mystified by the appeal of Teletubbies, but if your child loves the cheery little creatures, she'll love the books about their exploits as well. Follow her lead, but do experiment with a wide variety of books before you decide you know exactly what your child will like. Your little girl who loves dress-up and dolls may, to your surprise, also be the one who asks to hear Godzilla Likes to Roar or Monster Bugs over and over.

Go to the library
Even babies like library story-hours, and they're wonderful adventures for toddlers. Your child may well discover a new favorite when it's presented by a beguiling librarian with a soothing voice and perhaps some pictures or puppets to illustrate the action. And, of course, libraries let parents — and kids — try out countless stories without spending a bundle.

Push play
Many wonderful books exist on cassette or CD. Your toddler may not be interested in them because what she really likes about books is the interaction with you, says pediatrician Laura Jana, a national trainer for Reach Out and Read. But if your toddler does happen to like them, great. She may want to sit with the picture book while she listens to the recording, or you may want to put it on while the two of you do other things. You could also record yourself — or another relative or friend — reading stories. Just remember, says Jana, that recorded stories can't take the place of sitting down together.

Don't make books a reward
Don't tell your child she can listen to a story if she finishes her dinner. When reading is associated with systems of reward and punishment, it isn't a positive experience. Instead, pick times to read that feel natural, such as when you want your toddler to quiet down before her nap.

Dealing with the wigglers
Some wiggly youngsters just won't sit still through all of Blueberries for Sal. What to do? "Sit down and leaf through something short for just 30 seconds, and then say, 'Wow, we read this whole book!' Then let them go," says Leiderman. The next day you can try a little longer session. "Some children will always be more interested in motor activities than in reading," she says. "Respect that, and don't make reading a negative experience." If your toddler is the physically active type, she may respond best to the non-book-related activities described below.

Make storytelling a part of life
"Promoting reading readiness is more than reading a traditional book," says Leiderman. While you're at the dinner table or in the car, tell stories — standards like "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" anecdotes from your own childhood, or stories that feature your child as a central character. Make books of your child's drawings or favorite photos, and tell stories about them — or ask her to be the narrator.

Point out words everywhere
Wherever you go, you can show your child that words are an important part of everyday life. Even the youngest toddlers quickly learn, for example, that traffic signs say STOP. Alphabet refrigerator magnets are staples in many homes. Other families label objects around the house, such as the shelves that house BLOCKS, DOLLS, and other toys. If your child is in daycare or preschool, slip a daily note into her lunchbox. Even if she can't yet read CAT, seeing the word printed on a piece of paper, along with a drawing or sticker of a cute kitten, will be a high point in her day and help excite her interest in reading. If this seems too ambitious, try drawing a heart or smiley face with a simple "I love you," which will help get your toddler excited about the meaning behind words.

Talk
Children from families who converse at the dinner table have larger vocabularies, according to researchers at Harvard University. Talk with your toddler, and don't be afraid to use complex words and phrases. Encourage her questions and explanations. Toddlers are curious and wonder endlessly about the world, so don't be shy about trying to explore her interests with her.

Demonstrate your own love of books
Your child wants to imitate you. If she sees books all around the house and knows that you like to settle down with one whenever you have a moment to yourself, she'll learn that books are essential to daily life. Modeling your own love of reading is more powerful than making your child sit through a rigid story time.

Books for you
Numerous books have been written for parents who want to nourish a love of reading. Try Jim Trelease's The Read-Aloud Handbook, E.D. Hirsch's Books to Build On, Elizabeth Wilson's Books Children Love, and Bernice Cullinan's Read to Me: Raising Kids Who Love to Read.

00:04 Posted In , , Edit This

5. FEAR Clown

For some children instead funny clown figure but it frightening. Never happened, which act as a clown school party made some kindergarten children fear. They ran and hid under the table. Once traced, the child was indeed the child home. They only knew 'creatures' in the house. "To him, a clown's face is not funny anymore, but it turned into strange faces. Great posture and his movements were stiff, too often create fear. However, with introduction and habituation child will not be afraid again.

How do I usual? Many clowns "wandering" in the mall or a party, birthday party, so every now and then invite the child came to see the attractions. Explain in the clown costume that was a human being like him. To convince him, it would not hurt if the parent shows the pack of clowns are dressed up to do its job.

AVOID MENGANCAM

Avoid scaring kids with a clown figure. For example, "If you want to eat later kidnapped as a clown." How to solve it but not difficult to eat, also makes the child makes a clown a scary figure. To overcome this fear had taken a long time.

B. 'FACTOR BIRTH "

Here are the fears that have emerged in the toddler age but still occurred in preschool age. : Or, there are fears that an innate factor, as well as environmental influences, including:

1. FEAR OF WATER

Usually due to trauma or had been drowned he had an innate fear of water.Features resistance to water is very powerful object. Never mind the touching, seeing the water made her cry and scream. This fear usually appear in the toddler age is generally hard to break in a relatively short time. However, with proper handling, with an explanation and children in contact with air conditioned, this fear will be overcome.

HOW TO OVERCOME:

Tell us about the water and its properties. For starters, let him learn to touch the water. After a "friendly" take your child to play up to dare enter into the water. Teaching children to swim is also very useful because in addition can be made more familiar with the water, your child can slide in the swimming skills without worrying about drowning.

2.FEAR HEIGHT

If the other kids liked climbing or climb something, well this kid just did not dare to climb a ladder too. They generally experience in sensory sensitivity and balance. Therefore, there is a possibility other than the child afraid of heights is also experiencing difficulties in fine motor skills, for example, can not write well.

HOW TO OVERCOME:

Children not only need an explanation and habituation, but also the appropriate therapy in order to decrease fear and even disappear.

3. FEAR SMALL ANIMALS

There's a kid who is afraid of small animals like ants in the house, lizard, cat, cockroach, and others. Generally, the fear of this child revealed the closest, either caregivers or parents. So, parents are afraid of cockroaches would give birth to a child who is afraid of the same insect. Want proof? Look at the baby, whether the fear at the sight of cockroaches for the first time, would not you?

HOW TO OVERCOME:

a. If you fear a child because "me-too" parent, then the first parent to be able to control her fears. After that just can overcome the fear of children. If not possible, find another figure that is more courageous. Teach the little animal was not dangerous, but also not eligible to be a toy.

Toddler Eating Habits

22:46 Posted In , , , , Edit This
Written by Taylor Blue
Toddler eating habits, photo copyright Cindy KalamajkaToddlers never seem to make meal time easy. Here are some facts about toddler eating habits that may help you keep your sanity during this intense and confusing time of feeding your child.

• Their eating habits change. This seems to be a change that happens on a daily basis. Sometimes he’ll eat like he has never seen food and then another time he won’t even touch food. Don’t worry about this it is perfectly normal. And one thing to note is that he won’t die of starvation because he’s not eating. He’ll eat when he feels like it.

• Teach them mealtime manners. Tell your toddler there’s nothing wrong with them playing with their food. But tossing or spitting food is undesirable. If he starts one of these actions, tell him firmly to stop. Explain to him that food belongs on his plate or in his mouth.

• Encourage your picky eater. Don’t give up hope. If he rejects a food the first time get it out of his sight and try again in a few days or weeks. Children’s tastes are always changing. They may need you to introduce the food a couple times before they will try it and like it.

• Vary the places and what you eat. Sometimes a change in pattern can help your child to eat. Try serving breakfast for supper and supper for breakfast.

• Try to balance your child’s request for a snack. If your meal is a number of hours away you can offer a bigger sized snack. But if the meal is sooner, then suggest a smaller snack. When handing him the smaller snack explain to him that it is almost time to eat.

• Give them choices on what they want to eat. It helps children to have some control over what is happening to them. Having a selection of food for them to choose from helps them figure out what they like and dislike. To support them in their search for choices it might help to put the food in the centre of the table where everyone else can have fun too. A good food for this would be tacos.

• Be aware of the amount of juice or milk your child drinks all day. If they won’t eat at meal-time it may be because they filled up on liquids earlier.

• Make food fun. Being creative goes a long way to a toddler. Some things you can do are: Serve chicken, tuna or egg salad in ice cream cones or serve them as a dip for crackers or vegetables. Make a necklace or bracelet out of Cheerio’s and dried fruit.

These should help you and your toddler. If you think your toddler is a fussy eater and you are getting worried please talk to your doctor. They can help reassure you and refer you to local resources.

Treating Your Toddler’s Cold Symptoms Without Medicine

Natural Cold Remedies for Toddlers
Treating Your Toddler’s Cold Symptoms Without Medicine

© Rachel Lister

Jan 7, 2008
There are many natural ways to treat your toddler's common cold. New studies say that cold medicine may be harmful to children under 6.

With all of the latest warnings against giving toddlers cold medicine many parents are looking for alternatives to treat their child’s common cold symptom, especially since current studies show that cold medicine may or may not even be effective for toddlers. It can be heartbreaking to know that your toddler does not feel well but there are many natural alternatives to potentially dangerous cold medicine.
Use a Humidifier

A humidifier can be a wonderful tool to help clear your toddler’s stuffy nose. Turn a humidifier on while your toddler sleeps to decrease his congestion and help him sleep better. If you do not own a humidifier, turn the shower on and run the hot water for a few minutes with the bathroom door closed. Leave the bathroom fan off and let the room steam up. The steam will help relieve your toddler’s congestion without using cold medicine and can be repeated as often as needed.
A Spoonful of Honey

Not everything that your grandmother tells you is outdated. Honey used to be given to toddlers to sooth their cold symptoms and this is one bit of advice that is still useful. It is important that you never give infants younger than one year-old honey because of the risk of botulism, but toddlers can benefit from a spoonful of honey when they are sick. Give your toddler a tablespoon of plain honey if her cold symptoms are preventing her from sleeping or enjoying her day. Honey can sooth a scratchy throat and calm a cough as well as most over the counter medication. Toddlers will much prefer the sweet taste of honey over hard to swallow cough medicine.
Increase Fluids

Fluids can help a toddler to fight the common cold and heal more quickly. Water and juices, especially those high in vitamin C will help thin excessive mucous and sooth a sore throat. Try homemade popsicles for toddlers who are reluctant to drink fluids on their own. Freeze 100% orange juice in small paper cups and add a popsicle stick to the center before the juice has completely frozen for a healthy snack and a fun way for your toddler to enjoy important fluids.
Get Lots of Sleep

Sleep can help improve your ability to fight off illness. When your toddler has a cold he will need lots of extra sleep. Chances are he will be a bit cranky anyway and will be more than willing to take a bit longer nap and go to bed a few minutes early. Mom and Dad could probably use some extra sleep if they can get it to be sure they have the ability to fight off the cold germs so they don’t end up sick as well.
Prevention is the Best Medicine

The best way to treat a cold is not to get one in the first place. While that is next to impossible, you can practice a little preventative medicine to hopefully decrease the number of colds you do get throughout the year. Teach your toddler to practice good hand washing habits. Wash your toddler’s hands every time he enters your home or plays with other children. This will limit the number of outside germs that you bring into your home and result in few colds for your family.

Care For My Toddler's Teeth?

23:31 Posted In , , , , Edit This
How Do I Care for My Toddler's Teeth?

Passing on good oral habits to your child is one of the most important health lessons you can teach them. This means helping him or her brush twice a day, showing the proper way to floss, limiting between-meal snacks and seeing your dentist regularly.

Most dentists recommend that children start their dental visits by the age of two. In addition to giving your dentist a chance to monitor your child's dental growth and development, this is your chance to learn about tooth development, the need for fluoride, how to help your child maintain proper oral hygiene, how to deal with your child's oral habits (such as pacifier use), diet and nutrition, and how to prevent oral injuries.

Always emphasize that a dental visit is a positive experience. Explain to your child that visiting the dentist helps maintain good oral health. By fostering a positive attitude, you'll increase the chances that your child will see a dentist regularly throughout life.

What Should I Do When My Toddler's Teeth Begin to Erupt?
Teeth start to erupt at about 6 months and continue until age 3. This causes many children to have tender gums, which can make them irritable. It helps to rub the gums with your finger, a small cool spoon or a frozen teething ring that's been placed in the freezer. There are also pain relief gels and medications available for use when babies are teething. Ask your dentist or pediatrician about these medications. If your child has a fever when teething, it's best to contact your physician to rule out the possibility of some other kind of condition.

What's the Proper Way to Brush My Toddler's Teeth?
It's a good idea to supervise your child's brushing until the age of 6, following the guidelines below:

* Use a pea-sized amount of an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste. Take care that your child doesn't swallow the paste.
* Use a toothbrush with soft bristles, brush inside surfaces of all teeth first, where plaque accumulates most. Angle bristles toward the gumline. Brush gently back and forth.
* Clean all outside surfaces of teeth. Angle bristles toward the gumline. Brush gently back and forth.
* Place brush so bristles are on the chewing surface of the teeth. Brush gently back and forth.

Is Thumb or Finger Sucking a Problem and How Can I Treat it?
The sucking reflex is normal and healthy in babies. However, a thumb or finger sucking habit can cause problems with the growth of the mouth and jaw, and position of teeth, if it continues after permanent teeth have erupted, between four and seven years of age. Front teeth that point outwards (sometimes called buck teeth) and an open bite may result from habitual thumb or finger sucking. This can cause problems in adulthood that include premature tooth wear, increased dental decay and discomfort on biting. Sucking on pacifiers after permanent teeth have erupted may cause similar problems.

The best way to deal with thumb or finger sucking is through positive reinforcement, not negative words or behavior. Your child is only doing what feels natural to him or her. Praise your child when he is not sucking his thumb/finger. You may also want to focus on correcting the anxiety that's causing your child to suck her thumb/finger. You can remind your child of the habit by bandaging the thumb/finger, or putting on a sock over his hand at night. Bitter-tasting medication to coat the thumb can also be prescribed by your dentist or pediatrician.

I live with a very active child

23:26 Posted In , , , , Edit This
I live with a very active child and although I hate to use this word -- he's hyperactive.

* Some parents describe their children as "intense, demanding or difficult. This can be stressful for both the parent and the child.
* Sometimes it is hard for parents to remember that no child wants to be "bad."
* Very active children often have difficulty controlling their behavior. They need extra help and consideration from their parents.
* Providing structure and helping children control their own behavior, especially when the children are very active, can be very tiring. Parents need support and help from other family members and friends.
* Provide situations where your child can be successful and feel good about what they can do.
* It is helpful for parents and adults to:
o Recognize Typical Behaviors.
Knowing what most children do at what ages will assure most parents that their young children are "normal." For example, pre-schoolers typically want other children's toys and resist sharing. They normally are very active and have a short attention span.
o Establish Routines and Structure the Environment.
Very active children often have a hard time establishing patterns on their own. Advance preparation helps them function better. For example, remind them before it is time to start or stop an activity, or tell them what kind of behavior is expected from them. Better yet, ask them if they can tell you. Keep the same routines as much as possible.
o Give Limited Responsibility.
our child's behavior is more manageable when he/she is given limited choices that allow her to exercise a degree of self-control. Don't expect more than what your child is able to do developmentally.
o Decide Which Experiences Matter.
Don't overwhelm children with a lot of new things at once. Carefully select the most important new experience and help your child enjoy it along with old, familiar activities that he/she has mastered, before adding others.
o Responding to a Crisis.
Sometimes it simply is not possible to forewarn a child or plan in advance. When this happens, help your child cope with a new situation by supporting your child as best as you can. Explain what is going on and what is expected. If necessary find a place where it is acceptable for your active child to run around and blow off steam. Try to avoid situations that you know will be too difficult for your active child to cope with because you do not want to set your child up to fail.
o Investigate Possible Reasons for Very Active Behavior.
Some children may have a physical reason for being very active. It might be something as simple as a food allergy or something more serious. Talk with your child's doctor and early care and education teacher. If you feel you need more help you may want to call Child Find.

Toilet Training

22:51 Posted In , , Edit This
Toilet Training

Lantas kapan Si Buah Hati sebaiknya mulai dilatih ?

Sembelit yaitu berak hanya 2-3 kali seminggu.
