1. Olahraga berlebihan

Hal ini menunjukkan si bayi dalam keadaan sehat dan normal, karena refleks isap memang sudah seharusnya dimiliki bayi sejak lahir. Itulah mengapa, bila bayi mau menyusu, puting susu ibu tak perlu dipaksa dimasukkan ke mulut bayi. Cukup pipinya digeser-geser dengan puting, maka bayi akan mencari arah puting.

Selain itu, jarak waktu menyusui juga bisa berpengaruh. Nah, jika sarung tangan itu diisap-isap terus, tentunya jadi basah. Dalam kondisi basah, kuman dan kotoran akan lebih mudah melekat. Jadi, sarung tangan malah berdampak buruk untuk bayi,” terangnya. Selain sarung tangan, kadang orang tua juga suka memberikan empeng/dot. Awalnya, sih, karena bayinya masih rewel padahal sudah diberi ASI. Mereka khawatir bila minumnya ditambah, si bayi malah jadi muntah karena overfeeding atau overload (terlalu banyak menyusu). Nah, agar si bayi tak rewel dan muntah, diberilah empeng/dot. Berbeda dengan jari, menurut Nartono, empeng/dot tak begitu berpengaruh terhadap perkembangan gusi dan gigi, karena empeng tak sekeras jari. Selain itu, empeng/dot adalah benda di luar tubuh bayi, sehingga cara melepaskan kebiasaan mengempeng relatif lebih mudah dibandingkan bila jari yang diisap. Tapi dengan mengempeng, berarti banyak udara yang masuk ke perut bayi sehingga bayi akan mudah kembung. Selain itu, dari segi higenis, empeng/dot bisa saja jatuh dan yang menjaga bayi malas mencucinya kembali. “Biasanya, bila empeng jatuh cukup dilap sebentar di baju si pengasuh, langsung dimasukan kembali ke mulut bayi. Nah, ini, kan, bisa jadi masalah tersendiri buat bayi.” Dengan kata lain, baik sarung tangan maupun empeng/dot, justru akan menimbulkan masalah baru bila digunakan sebagai pengganti jari. Jadi, bagaimana, dong, sebaiknya?

Menurut Betty, orang tua sebenarnya tak perlu terlalu cemas, karena kebiasaan mengisap jari akan berhenti dengan sendirinya. Lagi pula, seperti telah dijelaskan di atas, mengisap jari merupakan pertanda si bayi sehat dan normal. Juga, merupakan salah satu kebutuhan bayi dari lahir sampai usia 3 bulan. Jadi, wajar saja. Bahkan, kata Betty, sampai usia 7 bulan pun, kebiasaan mengisap jari pada bayi masih dianggap wajar. Lain halnya bila setelah usia 7 bulan bayi masih saja meneruskan kebiasaannya mengisap jari. “Orang tua sebaiknya mencari tahu penyebabnya,” saran Betty. Mungkin bayi termasuk tipe yang memerlukan waktu lebih lama untuk menyusu. Jadi, cobalah perpanjang waktu menyusuinya. Toh, dia tak akan kekenyangan. Bukankah payudara sebenarnya sudah kosong? Tapi bila cara tersebut tak juga menyelesaikan masalah, bahkan frekuensi mengisapnya malah jadi semakin sering, maka orang tua kembali harus mencari penyebabnya. “Bisa jadi bayi mencari pengganti sesuatu, lalu dia mendapatkan jempolnya sebagai benda penghiburnya. Bukankah jari merupakan benda yang paling dekat dengannya?” Jika bayi memperoleh rasa nyaman dari jempolnya, lanjut Betty, bisa jadi dia mengalami rasa jemu, frustrasi, atau malah kecapekan. “Kasusnya hampir sama dengan bayi-bayi yang mencari rasa aman dari benda-benda di sekelilingnya, seperti selimut, bantal atau boneka.” Walau begitu, ingat Betty, tetap saja orang tua tak boleh memaksakan bayi untuk langsung menghentikan kebiasaannya. “Cobalah dengan mengalihkan perhatiannya pada kegiatan lain yang menarik dia. Misalnya, ciptakan permainan dengan tangan atau jari, seperti bermain tepuk tangan. Tentunya, permainan ini harus berkesan baginya.” Bisa juga dengan memberikan mainan kesenangannya atau ganti dengan mainan yang khusus untuk digigit. Namun jangan lupa, pastikan mainan tersebut aman dan bersih. Bila semua cara tersebut ternyata tetap tak membuahkan hasil, menurut Betty, orang tua sebenarnya juga tak perlu terlalu cemas selama tumbuh kembangnya normal. Jadi, meski bayi memiliki kebiasaan mengisap jari namun dia masih suka bermain dan ceria, ya, tak apa- apa. Tapi kalau dia mulai melamun dan sepanjang hari kegiatannya cuma mengisap jari, barulah orang tua boleh khawatir. Konsultasi dengan ahlinya merupakan alternatif yang terbaik bila orang tua tak jua bisa menemukan penyebabnya maupun mengatasinya.
